Adhatoda vasica Nees Extract
Justicia adhatoda L. is a large shrub of the Justicia genus in the Rubiaceae family, reaching a height of 1-3 meters. The gray branches are cylindrical in shape, and the young branches are densely covered with grayish-white soft hairs; the leaves are papery, rectangular-lanceolate to lanceolate, or ovate or elliptical-ovate; the spike-like inflorescences are ovate or slightly elongated, the bracts are ovate or broad ovate, the calyx lobes are rectangular-lanceolate, the corolla is white with purple stripes or pink, covered with soft hairs, the corolla tube is ovate, the locules are elliptical; the capsule is nearly woody [16]; the flowering and fruiting period is summer [17]. The petals at the top are spread out, resembling a duck bill, hence the name [18].
Justicia adhatoda is native to the tropical regions of India and is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Macao, Hong Kong, Yunnan and other regions in China [19-20]. It has strong adaptability and can grow in sunny or slightly shady areas, is cold-resistant, relatively tolerant of shade and drought, and prefers well-drained fertile soil [21]. Justicia adhatoda is classified as Least Concern (LC) in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species [22]. Its propagation methods are generally cuttings and seed sowing [23].
Justicia adhatoda has a bitter and pungent taste and a warm nature [24]. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, it can be used as a raw material to make twenty-five-flavor lapis lazuli pills [25], which have the effects of dispelling wind, activating blood circulation, dispersing stasis and relieving pain, and are used to treat symptoms such as rheumatoid arthritis and low back pain [26]. Its branches and leaves can be soaked in alcohol for drinking [27]. Justicia adhatoda can also be used as a hedge or planted in the garden for ornamental purposes [28].
