Theanine (the English name) is a unique free amino acid found in tea. Its scientific name is N-ethyl-γ-L-glutamine (N-ethyl-γ-L-glutamine) or N-(γ-glutamyl carbonyl)ethylamine (N-(γ-glutamyl carbonyl)ethylamine). Its molecular formula is C7H14N2O3, with a molecular weight of approximately 174.2. [4] All natural theanine is of the L-type.
