α-Ketoglutaric acid
α-Ketoglutaric acid (in English: α-Ketoglutaric acid) is one of the two ketone-containing derivatives of succinic acid (unless otherwise specified, the term "ketoglutaric acid" usually refers to the α form. The β form merely has a different position of the ketone group and is less commonly used). It is a white, fine crystalline powder. Melting point: 113.5ºC. It is soluble in water, alcohols, and extremely insoluble in ethers. It turns pale yellowish-gray over time and is prone to deliquescence. [1]
The anion of this substance, α-ketoglutarate, is an important biological compound. It is the ketone acid product of glutamate deamination and is an intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle.
